Cleansing is not a throwaway step
Everything applied after cleansing has to work against whatever state your barrier is in when it goes on. A cleanse that strips too much puts every step after it at a disadvantage — no matter how well-formulated those steps are.
- 1. Over-cleansing. Twice a day is enough for almost everyone. A third wash “just in case” usually strips more than it clears.
- 2. Water too hot. Hot water feels satisfying but breaks down the same lipids your barrier needs to hold onto.
- 3. Skipping the second cleanse at night. If you wore sunscreen or makeup, one cleanse often isn’t enough to fully remove it.
- 4. Rubbing dry with a towel. Patting instead of rubbing avoids unnecessary friction on damp, more vulnerable skin.
- 5. Using a cleanser that fights your other steps. A cleanser built to leave the barrier balanced — like Hydrating Gentle Cleanser +Biome Balance — means your actives aren’t working uphill from the very first step.
- 6. Treating cleansing as a 10-second afterthought. Thirty to sixty seconds of actual contact time matters more than scrubbing harder.
